How to Pick the Best Remote Control Mower for Your Land

Rebel Mowers offers different models of remote control mowers. While all are competent vegetation removal machines, each has its specialty. So, how do you know which one is right for you?

We offer 3 types of remote control, standard (grey), light industrial (blue) and heavy industrial (black). Find out more about remote control mowers at rebelmowers.com.au

Types of Mowers: Rotary vs. Flail

Rotary Mowers

The rotary mower is similar to the Victa lawn mower you grew up with—two swing-back blades attached directly to the motor. Our machines eject cut vegetation from the front and rear of the mower and cut just as effectively going backward as forward. This allows good waste clearance when cutting long, wet or thick grass.

The  blades are easily twice as heavy as the Victa blades and capably dissect almost all types of vegetation. Double sided too. I haven’t actually met anything these blades couldn’t cut but I’m sure there is something. Rocks maybe. Mine has thrown bricks, pavers, found a piece of railway line and I’ve hit dumped concrete. Everything is still ok.

Flail Mowers

A bit different in design, the blades are mounted on a spinning shaft that is belt driven from the motor. This shaft spins backwards so the blades hit low and lift the vegetation up as it cuts, throwing the cuttings forward to be mulched again. The flail is a vegetation mulching demolition machine and the rotary is a mower/slasher. Either will have you searching for more places to mow.

My customers have told me that if the machine can push the tree over, it can mulch it once down. I have discovered that this is true. Look for 30 second pine tree demolition on our YouTube page.

These teeth belong to my personal Rhino and I was removing some fencing wire I found. Each blade is made from sharpened, serrated and heat treated European guru steel so they are tough. These blades are double sided too.

Have you seen the  video of my 150 Kg Rhino cutting down and eating a 12’ pine tree in under 30 seconds? The flail mower doesn’t care what is in front of it, just rest the blades against the tree and edge it in.

Blackberries are not a problem for either type of machine nor are steep angles.

Chassis & Drive Types

Now we come to the chassis/drive type and again we have three types. Tractor, where the track is shaped like a triangle and The Tank which when looked at side on looks like a tank. Three types. I forgot the 4wd. More of a toy. They get hooked up on anything.

Tractor Mower

The Tractor Mower is built for toughness. The track is shaped like a triangle. The motor and gearbox are located on top of the mower deck fully protected from impact harm or damage from flipping by the motor and battery box. The overhead drive track layout allows a shorter machine compared to the tank offering better maneuverability in the tight stuff without giving away hillside stability. This design also offers better water resistance due to all electrics being located higher.

Drawback? A slightly higher centre of gravity because they are 100mm or 4” taller.

Tank Mower

The Tank mower is designed to have the lowest centre of gravity and the lowest overall height. There is something primal about the sound of a vee twin. These machines look rather menacing don’t they? A tank, like its namesake, kinda goes wherever it is directed and you will be glad you are not sitting on it. You will have access to even steeper areas of your block and slip under lower tree branches, fences, grape vines etc. Drawback? The drive motors and gearboxes are located down low at the back of the machine where they can be hit by rocks or trees when reversing and you must avoid water full stop.

4WD Mower

More of a toy-like option. Can get hooked up on almost anything but offers less rugged performance than the Tractor or Tank.

Choosing the Right Size

Two main factors: horsepower and cutting width.

  • Smaller machines are often better for harsh, overgrown vegetation—they can navigate tighter spaces and are easier to recover if stuck.
  • Larger machines can weigh over 350 kg, with some topping almost half a tonne. Consider your ability to recover the machine in challenging terrain.

Power & Performance

  • Machines range from 7.5 Hp lawn mowers to 30 Hp Vee Twin lantana demolition machines.
  • Climbing ability is impressive—you can mow in 5 minutes what took hours with a brushcutter.
  • As you gain confidence, you may start tackling steeper hills, previously inaccessible areas, and more extreme vegetation.
  • Smaller machines are easier to manhandle if they get stuck, a practical advantage in tough terrain.

“That machine has too much horsepower,” said no one.

Final Thoughts

  • Remote control mowers open new possibilities, letting you mow areas previously impossible with traditional equipment.
  • Consider vegetation type, terrain, mower size, and chassis design when choosing the best model for your land.
  • With the right machine, mowing becomes faster, safer, and far more enjoyable.
